Principal's Weekly Update

Dear Families,

Happy New Year! Can you believe we entered a new decade? Where does the time go? It was great to welcome back rested students and staff. As we return for the winter stretch, I thought I’d take a moment to preview some upcoming events. Please read on and note dates carefully...

If you are applying for financial aid, you may register online by contacting the Student Assistance Counselor, Lauren Gutierrez, for a coupon code to be used during registration. • January PTA Meeting Update: The meeting scheduled for January 7th has been cancelled.
  • MLK Day On: MLK Day On is fast approaching! On Monday, January 20thwe will be having our annual MLK Day On! Day of Service from 9:30AM - 12PM. Every year we have an amazing day celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, while serving our community by preparing and delivering meals to local seniors. The PACE MUSIC GROUP will also treat us to another amazing performance. The show starts promptly so please get here on time. This is an enormous undertaking that has been successful year after year because of the help of our CHB community. We're calling all parents and caregivers to sign up to bring prepared meals for the day and/or volunteer to help during the day. Any and all help is welcome. You can email Monk
  • CHB Winter Concert: Our annual Winter Concert is scheduled for Thursday, January 23rd at 7:00 pm. 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students who are performing are to arrive at 6:30pm.
  • Bullock Reads – Mark your calendar! Bullock Family Reading Night is coming. This is a free, family event. K-2 families join us on Tuesday night, February 4th and 3-5 families join us on Wednesday, February 5th. Our doors will open for Bullock students and families to come for dinner (6:00pm) and then off to classrooms to read together and engage in reading activities. We highly recommend wearing pajamas so that you can go home and straight to bed. Everyone is a winner, because everyone will take home a baggie just for reading––and make sure your child brings in their raffle ticket for a chance to win an awesome literacy basket.
  • It's Green Ball time CHB!! – What is Green Ball? It is the school’s biggest fundraising, adult only, evening event. The Green Ball Committee is starting to heat up. To make this event another success, we need you, CHB Community. We are looking for people to help chair the various committees. It could be Auction/Sponsorship, Design, Classroom Art, Teacher Treats. Any questions, please reach out Jada Roman (Green Ball Chair) via email
  • Recess in the Winter: Our winter recess rule is in line with our overall recess policy: Children need a chance to be outdoors every day possible. We believe that large muscle play and a chance to breathe fresh air are beneficial to our students’ growth and development. So, we take children outdoors for recess in winter every day that we can. Please dress your child accordingly, including: a warm, play-worthy jacket, head covering, gloves or mittens, and shoes that are safe for running and climbing.
    • Twenty eight degree temperature and below (including wind chill), we remain indoors.
    • We avoid icy conditions and, as in other seasons, we stay indoors for recess if it is raining or dangerously windy.
  • From MFEE: Don't miss out on MFEE/MHS Life After High School Conference for teens and their caregivers on Saturday January 11th, 2020 in the George Innes Annex, 141 Park Street, from 9 am - 12:45pm.This FREE event gives teens - and their parents! - inspiration, support and advice for navigating high school and post-high school life with confidence, creativity, and resilience. It is open to 8th - 12th graders.

We've pulled together a cool group of people who will lead workshops addressing topics like: Finding Your Passion, Designing Your Comeback When Life Throws You a Curveball, Being Okay With Not Knowing Your Plan, Developing Support Networks, and Life isn't Linear.

Teens can also explore "Try It!" workshops that teach them a new skill like mindfulness, financial literacy, and an interview bootcamp.

Parent workshops will address supporting the social and emotional health of teens...and of the parents who care for them!

Participants must register prior to the event and select their preferred workshops.  Here is the registration link.
