Principal's Weekly Update

Principal's Weekly Update

9-12-2021

Dear CHB Families and Caregivers,

After 18 months of remote and hybrid schooling, the children returned to CHB with their peers to find teachers ready to support them as we reopened for the 2021-2022 school year! It is such a pleasure to hear our classrooms come alive with laughter, see student artwork, observe students practicing new skills, and watch as they make connections with friends old and new. I am thankful the students have finally had the opportunity to begin settling into their new learning environment!

Please know that I am in receipt of your feedback and am sharing it with Central Office Administrators. As we meet to discuss the learning environment for students and educational practices, your feedback is reviewed.  As changes can be made I will inform the community, as well as reach out to the PTA if there are areas where I can enlist their support.

For those new to the Bullock Community, you can expect this weekly communication from me no later than Sunday evening each week. My update to you will always include General Information, PTA Notes, and a Save the Date section.

GENERAL INFORMATION

CHB Family Handbook:
Please be sure to visit our website to view the revised Family Handbook.  WEBSITE insert

Hispanic Heritage Month:
Our community will spend this month appreciating contributions, history and heritage of American citizens who came from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean, and South- and Central America.

Social Justice & Equity Curriculum:
As mentioned in our Family Handbook, we are launching the study of social justice standards across the year. Each trimester we will engage in a schoolwide read-aloud that addresses a focus standard. The first social justice standard we will address is Identity, using the book "Your Name is a Song" by Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow. Teachers have been provided the book, a read aloud plan, and accompanying resources to support their work addressing identity in this and many other recommended read alouds. I am excited to begin this initiative with the Bullock community. Look for more information from your classroom teacher throughout the semester.

Safety at Arrival:
During arrival and dismissal, please remember to use the crosswalks. Our busses come through Washington Street and we are modelling for children how to safely cross the street. Please remind your children to look for the adult at the crosswalk to see if it is safe to cross the street. I am normally at the Main Entrance Crosswalk and the crossing guard is at the Elm Street crosswalk.

Food Service:
Montclair Public Schools participates in the USDA Child Nutrition Program and benefits have been approved through the 2021-2022 school to provide every child (1) free lunch each day. Families do not need to add any money onto the accounts of elementary school students. Students will not use codes this year. Indicating your preference to have lunch on Monday and Wednesday, when you fill out the health screener, helps food services predict how many lunches to make on a daily basis. If your child brings a home lunch and is still hungry, they can have a school lunch. The lunches are pre packaged in bags for students so that they may grab & go back to their lunch table.

Lunch Applications:
As a reminder, all families (regardless of eligibility) are asked to complete and submit lunch applications for the new school year. Our state funding is tied to the number of lunch applications submitted so we are striving for 100% of families completing the application. If you have not done so already, please submit your Free & Reduced Lunch Application. Even though everyone is being provided free lunches this year, we are required to have all families complete the applications for state reporting.

Outdoor Lunch:
We will hold outdoor lunch as much as possible. Tents were ordered but the delivery was held up due to the severe weather we received. As soon as we receive them they will be put up to shelter the students, while eating in the rain. Please be mindful of the weather and send a jacket or hoodie, as it will be damp out in these conditions.

Dismissal Changes:
Parents please email your child’s teacher, Beth Albert and Marty Turlin to communicate any dismissal changes or early pick-ups by 12:00pm. This is an update to a previously stated time. We have found the end of the day to be very busy and we would not want to miss your communication.

Counselors Corner:
Please take a moment to view the September Newsletter from Ms. Gutierrez.

Communication:
Classroom teachers will begin communicating with you weekly. Look for more information from the teacher to learn more about when to expect it and how it will be provided. Please make sure that Genesis reflects email accounts that you check regularly.

Spirit Fridays:
We, as the Bullock community, wear school spirit wear on Friday. Don’t have spirit wear yet? Not to worry. Please encourage your child to wear our school colors which are Blue and Green, just blue, or just green!
