5th Grade

Fifth Grade Website

The 5th Grade is an exciting time at CHB. We encourage active citizenship and leadership throughout the year and create experiences for the students to give back to our local and global communities through fundraising efforts as well as community service opportunities. Students have performance opportunities through our Invention Convention and the Constitutional Convention. One of our culminating events is our annual Spring Fair, which is hosted by the fifth grade students and created for the kindergarten and first grade in the Spring.

In fifth grade math the topics we begin our year with are operations with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Automatic recall of basic multiplication facts is critical for the topics we address in fifth grade.  After students understand how to work with those numbers we apply that understanding to volume, the order of operations, and geometry. We know that math makes sense for kids when they know it is okay to make mistakes and when it connects to the real world.  With that in mind time is spent building confidence, exposing students to the math in the world around them, and embracing art as a means to communicate math topics. Through a co-teaching model we plan differentiated, multi-sensory lessons that actively engage and support all learners.

In Language Arts students begin their year reading and writing memoirs. This is a great way to kick off the year as we learn about each other and share our favorite small moments from our lives. Throughout the year we weave nonfiction and essay units in between poetry, fantasy and social issues. As students grow as readers and writers they are given opportunities to have their work published in our own 5th grade anthology. We transition the written word into the spoken word with our annual Poetry Jam in the spring. Students learn that inspiration is all around them and they use these moments to grow as both readers and writers.

Our Science topics include practicing the scientific method through experiments, Cell Theory, human body systems, and, as the Environment Magnet school, year round environmental awareness study and projects.  We also encourage students to create new inventions and organize an Invention Convention during which students introduce and market their inventions.  In Social Studies, we study the development of the United States and it's government.  We do close readings of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, interpreting the language and intentions in these historical documents and developing ideas of how these documents impact us today. The study of the U.S Constitution culminates in a reenactment of the Constitutional Convention with student written scripts.
