Update on NJ State Assessments - 3.7.22

State and District Testing Summary:

The Montclair Public Schools Summary of State and District Testing for 2021-2022 provides a high-level overview of standardized assessments and other assessments given to students in our district. See Summary of Testing parent letter. These include tests used for state graduation requirements as determined by the New Jersey State Department of Education (NJDOE). 

Please note, there are new assessments that will be administered this year listed below:

Start Strong:
State assessment administered to ELA: Grades 4-10, Math: Grades 4-8, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 & Science: Grades 6, 9 and 12
Testing Window: September 13-October 22, 2021

Virtual Presentation for Parents/Start Strong Summary of Results, Feb. 10, 2022
The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) created the Start Strong assessment in response to the cancellation of the NJ Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) in the Spring of 2021. This test is a shortened version that gives immediate results to teachers.  It is not intended for being compared to NJSLA or to be used as a predictor for NJSLA performance.  Its intended purpose is for helping teachers to see what areas of focus need additional support at the start of the school year. 

When looking at results please keep in mind the impact COVID and quarantine or remote instruction has had on learning and time in the classroom. Parents and guardians received a copy of their child’s Start Strong report in December and can access scores and the score report in the Genesis parent portal.The presentation shows the summary of performance for Montclair Public School students on this test.  

The Department of Equity, Curriculum and Instruction is focused on supporting instruction after the pandemic by using multiple criteria in addition to Start Strong assessment.  For example, we use multiple benchmarking and assessment tools, grades and teacher input to determine how to best support our learners.  

New Jersey State Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJSGPA): 
State assessment for graduation administered to Grade 11 students
Testing Window: March 14-18, 2022*

Acadience Reading: Replacing Dynamic Reading Assessment (DRA) for grades K-8
Administered four times throughout the school year. See parent letter for more information (9.24.21).

New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA):
English Language Arts (ELA) and Math (NJSLA-E, NJSLA-M) ELA grades 3-11 and Mathematics grades 3-8, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2
Science (NJSLA-S) Grade 5, 8 & 11 state science assessment

ACCESS 2.0 for English Language Learners (ELL) - an assessment for K-12 students who have English as a secondary language,
Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) for ELA and Math - an alternate assessment for students with significant intellectual disabilities in ELA and Math,
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT) - an assessment given to all 10th and 11th grade students, and
District Algebra Placement Test - an assessment for students in grades 5 and 6,Renaissance Learning STAR – Math, ELA and Early Literacy diagnostic and benchmark assessments
Accuplacer - an optional college placement test for seniors,
Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery assessment (ASVAB) - an optional assessment for seniors,
Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) - an optional college placement test for seniors,
American College Test (ACT) - an optional college placement test for seniors,
Avant STAMP Testing - an assessment administered to all 8th grade students to measure individual proficiency in the domains of reading, writing, listening, and speaking in a target language.

Specific testing dates of state assessment administration may vary by school and parents/guardians will be notified once scheduled.
