Qualities and Role of Restorative
Practices Coordinator:
The Montclair Public Schools’(MPS) Restorative Practice (RP) Coordinator will
be a highly motivated energetic educator who is a visionary leader with a
clear, concise understanding of Restorative Justice practice and its
implementation within the MPS setting. The Restorative Practice
Coordinator must be trained, willing and able to model the expectations of a
positive school climate; articulate this vision to Restorative Justice Teachers
on Special assignment (TOSA’s), Administrators, students, staff and parents;
and, be committed to analyzing, planning and facilitating the expansion of the program
to ensure continuity and consistency of practices throughout the district.
The responsibilities of the Restorative Practice Coordinator will be comprised
of the following:
- Spokesperson for the philosophy of Restorative Practice
through modeling and messaging all aspects of the practices: teaching,
monitoring and reviewing effective proactive/preventative restorative
practices in accordance with district policy and regulations
- Providing ongoing training, coaching, and mentoring to
guide TOSA’s and other staff in implementation of existing practice
- Supporting the administrators’ role in ensuring
implementation within their buildings
- Facilitating a plan of action for the expansion of
program development in schools that are not currently trained in RP protocols
Qualifications of the Restorative
Practice Coordinator:
- Master’s degree in a related field, preferably Social
Services
- Exceptionally strong interpersonal and communication
skills; both written and verbal.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned
responsibilities.
- Proven ability to mediate conflict situations.
- Demonstrated leadership skills of strategic planning,
relationship building, and maintaining program efficacy.
- Training in Restorative Justice Circle Keeping,
preferred.
- Demonstrated commitment as a life-long learner who is
open to ongoing training for refinement of practice.
Performance Responsibilities needed
to improve school climate and insure
the growth and continued success of the Restorative Justice Practices in the
district.
The RP Coordinator will:
- Facilitate mediations, as needed, in response to
conflicts among students, educators and family members.
- Inform families, administrators, and educators about
incidents in school, as needed, with the assistance of the Behavioral
Teams and building Administrators.
- Circulate throughout the district buildings to build
and foster relationships with all stakeholders and cultivate advocates for
RP among administrators, educators, students, families and community
members.
- Support teachers and inside the classroom through
observation, coaching, and modeling of RJ practices.
- Establish a “feed-back” loop for administrators,
educators and students to use in order to express concerns/testimonials
about the process.
- Provide ongoing restorative practice professional
Development to TOSA’s, staff, and administrators.
- Facilitate debriefing sessions for teachers and
students for the purpose of expanding understanding,
- Provide follow-up sessions to ensure program
effectiveness.
- Use peace circles to build a sense of community
- Plan and facilitate trainings that expand the existing
scope of the program throughout the district; train the administrative
team so they can ensure compliance with district policy and regulations;
teach students conflict resolution techniques; and develop a common
language among community members.
- Advocate for educators and students in Behavior Team
meetings.
- Gather and organize measurable assessment data to
inform a variety of stakeholders of trends regarding the school climate as
a means of communicating about the effectiveness of the RP work being
accomplished in the school buildings.
- Assist with the planning and implementation of district
policies, regulations and codes of conduct that align restorative practices.
- Attend Restorative Practices implementation and
Conflict Circle training and any other opportunity that will enhance the
Coordinators practice in facilitating the goals.
Report to: Assistant Superintendent
Terms of Employment: 10 months inclusive of summer and after school work, as
determined by the Board; salary according to MEA contract plus annually
approved stipend by board of education.
Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with the
Board’s policy on evaluation of certified staff.
